Three diverse choices this week, once again a mix of the old and the new.
1) How do you describe Chico Mann’s style? It’s clearly a fusion of 1970s Afrobeat, 1980s Freestyle and Afro Cuban. Just close your eyes, listen to this 45-minute set and you’ll be transported to the soft golden sands of a beach in Miami or Cuba.
2) Remember the video for “212” by Azealia Banks? There’s a guy in it with black hair and circular spectacles. Remember? Well that’s Jacques Greene. The Montreal producer released his debut album a month ago and this is a track from it.
3) Todd Terry released “Jumpin’” in 1994 and then “Keep on Jumpin’” in 1996. Both are individually great tracks, but what would happen if you mashed them together? Thankfully the Rhythm Masters were already ahead of us and produced this remix in 1996.
